Thursday, June 18, 2020, around 6:20 pm, Bill Cannons, 99, left this earth and joined his wife Connie in heaven.
His membership number, 2477, tells you he was a long-time member of SCCA. He had quite a history in racing and with CFR. In 1957, he helped gain community support for the initial construction of the Daytona International Speedway. In the 1960’s and 1970’s, he successfully fielded several cars – a TR3, TR4 and an Alfa Romeo – and raced throughout Florida at tracks like Jacksonville, Osceola, Sebastian, Palm Beach International Raceway and at Daytona for the 24 Hour, and at CFR’s premier event – the Paul Whiteman Regional/National races.
Bill joined CFR in 1969 and served as a District Governor, Chief of Grid and spent many hours on a turn in Flagging and Communication and also in Timing & Scoring. He held Sr. licenses in F & C, Pit/Grid and a National Race Administration license. He was a long time Race Chairman for all our Daytona events and also supported the many Pro events held there. If you needed anything at Daytona, you called “BC” on the radio.
He was awarded CFR’s Distinguished Service Award in 1976 and was selected to the CFR Hall of Fame in 2002. In 2012, CFR created its Lifetime Achievement Award as the ultimate recognition for a member’s service and dedication to our Region. It was fitting that Bill was the first recipient of this award – later renamed the Bill Cannons Lifetime Achievement Award.
Bill was instrumental in establishing CFR’s long standing relationship with the Speedway and CFR will forever be indebted to him for his support and service. We will miss his friendliness, enjoyment of the sport, his knowledge and the stories of the many adventures 99 years of life bestowed upon him. We send our deepest sympathies to his daughter Susan and the rest of his family
